Transitioning to a big-kid bed: a parent's guide to bedding & sleep
Going from crib to a big-kid bed is one of the first "I'm growing up" moments. The right bedding, the right size, and a little ceremony around it make the transition feel safe and exciting instead of scary.
When are kids ready?
Most children make the move between 18 months and 3.5 years, usually when they start climbing the crib rail or potty training. There's no perfect age — readiness matters more than the calendar.
Choosing the right bed size
A twin (39" × 75") is the most popular first big-kid bed: low enough to climb in safely, big enough to last through elementary school. A toddler bed (using the crib mattress) is a gentler step but gets outgrown fast.
What to look for in kids' bedding
- Natural fibers. GOTS-certified organic cotton breathes well and stays soft wash after wash.
- A bedding set for twin beds usually includes a fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillowcase, and duvet cover — enough to fully dress the bed.
- Prints they help pick. Letting your child choose the pattern is the easiest way to make the new bed theirs.
- Easy care. Look for pre-washed cotton, sturdy stitching, and machine-washable everything.
Making the first night feel special
Build the bed together, read the first bedtime story sitting on it, and keep one familiar lovey from the crib. A new pillowcase or duvet in their favorite color anchors the change as something to look forward to.
